Who we are
Off Planet Books & Puzzles is a small, independent Iowa bookshop founded in 2021 by Bill Claman. We sell new and bargain books on witchcraft, mythology, horror, fantasy, science fiction and mystery, along with jigsaw puzzles, board games and activity books.
Meet Bill
Bill is a US Air Force veteran who served in Desert Storm. He is also an author: his book Hungry For Mars? Here's Your Menu! How And What You Will Eat On Mars takes a practical, curious look at feeding people on another planet. That mix of real-world grit and big cosmic curiosity is the whole personality of this shop.
Why "Off Planet"?
Because the best books and puzzles take you somewhere else. Our shelves lean toward the strange and wonderful: spellbooks and herbals, monsters and myths, haunted houses in 500 pieces, and stories that feel a little bit alien. Our motto says it simply: we give you space to read and play.
Why bargain books?
Many of our books are remainders: brand new, unread copies from publisher overstock. They often carry a small mark on the page edges and sell for less than cover price, which lets us keep good books affordable and out of the landfill.
